Helping Children Make Positive Changes in Behaviors, Attitudes and Emotions

About Me

ABOUT ME
Susan M. Myers**, MEd, LCMHC*, NCC, RPT
*previously LPC  **previously Twyman

The method of therapy I use is based on  the needs of the client. I have experience in  Play Therapy, including Sand Play, Reality Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Cognitive-Behavior Therapy. At times I may use one or a combination of these therapies.

Play Therapy is very effective with young children. Therapists strategically utilize play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to convey thoughts and feelings.

My Thoughts about Counseling

As a counselor, it is very important that the children I work with are comfortable with me. During our time together, my clients and I develop a relationship of mutual trust and respect. I provide acceptance and support for the client so that they can comfortably and confidently move forward on their journey toward positive change.
Children express their feelings effectively through creative arts such as drawing, Play-doh and music. This is a non-threatening form of communication that is fun for the child and enlightening for the counselor. I encourage children to use these forms of expression.

Experience

I understand the daily challenges of parenting, having raised two children. I have experience with a wide variety of children in a number of settings including counseling children in foster care, conducting adoption home studies and working with pregnant and parenting teens. For 24 years, I was a guidance counselor with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. I have volunteered as a group leader for children at Hospice/Palliative Care's Camp Carousel. My experience in the school system and service agencies has given me insight into the complex world of today's child.
